Trip Report on the Lake Champlain Port Henry Trip

On Tuesday April 8th, Paul Grzyb and myself took a trip up to Port Henry to check out the boat ramp, look for lodging and find a banquet spot.
We took 90 to 87 north. This is the longest mileage way but fastest time wise (if you get through Albany traffic free). Of course as we headed north we started seeing snow again. As we started nearing the area I told Paul I remembered a short cut. Of course that was about 20 years ago. Off we went on this old windy road with 5 foot high snow banks in the middle of absolutely no where. We were out of coffee, getting hungry and between a map, 2 GPS systems and old memory we knew we were getting close. We stumbled into the village or Moriah, NY. We saw a sign for a coffee shop and in we went. It was a small place with 2 tables and an open kitchen. We were a bit skeptical but then Debbie starting cooking. We had a great breakfast. She also had home made corn chowder which I deemed was the best on the planet and Paul and I had cleaned her out by taking 6 quarts of it home! Then I ask where we could have a banquet. Turns out she just bought the whole corner block and is re-habbing the whole place and will have a room suitable for a banquet and catering is available well within our budget. This place is 2 miles from the boat ramp.
Now we looked for lodging. There is a campground literally right at the boat launch. Costs are $28.00 per night for a tent site with electricity. This is a quiet time of the year for them so space should not be an issue.
We found a real dive hotel called Collins’s apprx. 1.5 miles from the ramp that only has a few rooms. For those that know the Town Line in New Hampshire, this place might be a step down. We found a place with cabins called Sportsman’s Cabins. They are just across the Champlain Bridge and 10 miles from the tournament launch however, there are launches right around the corner from there for those practicing. There is additional launching in Ticonderoga at the Super 8. This is close to the Ticonderoga ramp but apprx.16 miles from the Port Henry ramp. So, unfortunately, we are going to have to be spread out as there will be no hotel capable of housing all of us in the Port Henry area.
The lake was still iced in on April 8th and the place was very quiet. We stopped at the Port Henry town village and they gave us all the info we would need. The pre-tournament Banquet will be Thursday Sept 11, 2008 at the Coffee Corner in Moriah, NY (2 miles from the boat ramp) 518-665-8074 starting at 4:00pm. Dinner will be included and there will be a cash bar. At the banquet we will pick start numbers and discuss all tournament rules and how the event will flow. In honor of September 11th we will have a collection and raffle and donate the money to a needy charity in this town where 100% of our money will go to people that need it. Also, Bonnie at the Coffee Corner has agreed to do a fisherman’s lunch for the tournament weekend. I will work out the details and pre-collect for this. We discussed ham/cheese, turkey and roast beef grinders, chips and a drink. They will be delivered to the ramp fresh and meet or exceed my standards.

Respectfully,
- Dave Sullivan – NEBA of MA President
